Mausoleum of Josip Broz Tito, former communist revolutionary and President of Yugoslavia and his wife Jovanka Broz in Belgrade. Tito was born to a Croat father and Slovene mother in the village of Kumrovec, Austo-Hungary (now in Croatia). Tito became the youngest Sergeant Major in the Austro-Hungarian Army and participated in the Russian Revolution and Civil War. Tito returned to the Balkans in 1918 and joined the communist party Yugoslavia. During World War II he led the Partisans (Yugoslav guerrilla movement). after the war he became Prime Minister and then President, later President for Life. Tito was the architect of the second Yugoslavia, a federation which lasted from November 1943 until April 1992.
